Brennan Manning quotes suddenly popped up here and there on my Facebook newsfeed last Friday. Without having to read about it, I just knew. He had passed away and had entered into the arms of the Father.
Manning was one of the first people I got to interview while I was an associate editor. This was several years ago and my work was hosting a conference in Dallas. I remember researching and reading up on him and his books as much as possible. I didn’t really know what I was doing. He had fallen asleep while waiting for me as I finished an interview just before his. I woke him up and started asking questions. It wasn’t exactly the best way to start a conversation.
Ruthless Trust was one of the first spiritual books I had ever read at the time. And in an only God-ordained way, it was the perfect book for me at the moment. I had been struggling a lot about my identity and knowing how to be honest with myself and God. Manning’s book hit me in a way that I needed to be hit. At the core of all my anxieties and doubts, God still loves me. God has always loved me. And He always will. Manning writes with authority about God’s love and grace because he is someone who has experienced those things first hand.
If you haven’t read Brennan Manning’s books, pick one up and read it. His words are carefully woven together to create a basket full of wisdom. Get ready to be overwhelmed by God’s overwhelming love.
I leave you with this post from Donald Miller:
